Windows XP Ethernet Connection

These instructions are for setting up an ethernet connection under Windows XP at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. These are fairly general instructions and may not cover all networking and hardware configurations. Please consult your departmental network administrator or technical coordinator for more information and assistance.

Before you begin...

Before you get started with connecting to the network, you should make certain that you have the following items at hand:

  • Your IP address (usually obtainable from NTS), subnet mask, and gateway address.
  • Confirmation that your ether jack is active (also obtainable from NTS).
  • You have Administrative privileges in Windows XP.

Configure TCP/IP for Internet Access

If you use DHCP in your department or are in University Housing then go on to the Windows XP DHCP Configuration Guide.

  1. Click the Start button, Control Panel and open Network Connections.
  2. Double click on Network Connections and then double click on Local Area Connection.
  3. Click on Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
  5. Select Use the following IP address and enter your IP address, subnet mask, and gateway into their respective fields.
  6. Select Use the following DNS server addresses: and type the following addresses:
    • 128.101.101.101
    • 134.84.84.84

    IPAddress

  7. Click the Advanced... button.
  8. Click on the DNS tab.
  9. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order).
  10. Click the Add... button in the Domain Suffix Search Order area to enter domain suffixes. Add the following domain suffixes:
    • umn.edu
    • tc.umn.edu

The order does matter somewhat if you actually use this function.

  11. Click the OK button to return to the TCP/IP Properties.
  12. Click the OK button to return to the Local Area Connection properties.
  13. Click the Close button in the Local Area Connection properties to save your changes. You may be prompted to restart your computer in order for these changes to take effect.

After you've restarted your computer, you should be able to access the Internet, including Web sites and e-mail.

If you have Client Service for Netware installed, you can also connect to the ADCS Information Server to install internet applications on your machine.

If you have any other questions related to connecting to the University of Minnesota's network, please contact the Technology Helpline at 612-301-4357 (1-HELP).
