Ethernet connections with Open Transport for Macintosh | View PDF Version

These instructions detail using Open Transport to connect to the University of Minnesota ethernet backbone. You should contact your network administrator before you start to make certain that your networking information is correct.

Before you begin...

You should have the following items and information handy before you start installing and configuring software:

  • Your system software disks or CD
  • Your network configuration information: IP address, subnet mask, gateway/router address. If you don't have this information, contact your network administrator or contact NTS to find this information.
  • Confirmation that your etherjack is active (contact NTS or your network administrator for this).
  • Your Internet ID and password. Your central University Internet ID/password are obtainable from ADCS. Departmental usernames and passwords should be obtained from your network administrator.

Installing Open Transport

You will have better results if you use a current version of Open Transport (1.1.2). You can check to see if you have Open Transport installed, and the version you have installed by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and look for control panels named AppleTalk and TCP/IP.
  2. If you do not see AppleTalk or TCP/IP, but do see Networking or MacTCP, then you don't have OT but "classic" networking. You will need to upgade your OS to at least 7.6.1.
  3. If you see AppleTalk or TCP/IP, open one of them, go to the File menu and choose Get Info. Your version of OT should be 1.1.2 or later. If you have an earlier version, see below to install OT.

If you need to install OT, read on. If you don't, you can jump to the section on configuring AppleTalk or TCP/IP.

  1. Download the latest version of OT directly from Apple. You may have the option to download the Net Install version of OT to get the full installer all at once, or to download OT in smaller, separate pieces if you have a slow or unreliable Internet connection.
  2. Before installing OT on your Mac, you should remove any vestiges of the MacTCP and Networking control panels from your System folder and restart your computer.
  3. Insert the first OT disk (or open the OT network installtion folder), and double-click the installer. Follow the prompts to install OT. You will have to restart your machine when the installation is finished.

Configuring AppleTalk

AppleTalk allows you to access other Macintosh computers and network servers via the Chooser.

  1. Open the AppleTalk control panel.
  2. Set Connect via: to Ethernet.

    AppleTalk control panel

  3. Select the appropriate AppleTalk zone for the Current zone value (consult your network administrator if you are unsure of what this should be).
  4. Close the AppleTalk control panel by clicking the close box in the upper left-hand corner of the window. Click the Save button when asked if you want to save the current configuration.

Configuring TCP/IP

If you use DHCP in your department or are in University Housing then go on to the Macintosh DHCP Configuration Guide.

  1. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
  2. Set Connect via: to Ethernet, and Configure: to Manually (consult your network administrator, in case your network is set up to obtain the IP address via BootP or DHCP).
  3. Enter your IP address in the IP Address field.
  4. Enter your subnet mask in the Subnet mask field.
  5. Enter your gateway/router address in the Router address field.
  6. Enter 128.101.101.101 and 134.84.84.84 in the Name server addr box.
  7. Enter umn.edu and tc.umn.edu in the Search domains box.

    TCP/IP Control Panel

  8. Close the TCP/IP window, and it will ask you if you want to save the current configuration, select the Save button.

You should now be able to access the Internet using any Internet application (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer, SSH).
