TCP/IP
Automatic (use DHCP)

Wired Ethernet (on the University network)

This is the high-speed Internet connection available in most buildings on campus. It is sometimes referred to as "data" or "etherjack" service.
Departments may order data services online.

Internet Service, from home

The University is not a direct provider of home Internet Service. However, we have negotiated bulk discounts with local dial-up, cable, and DSL vendors. University faculty, students, staff, and alumni may purchase this service directly from the selected vendors through UMart.

High-speed / broadband

Cable and DSL connections are much faster than dial-up but are also more expensive. The connection is always on, and it does not tie up your phone line. Compare DSL and cable.

Dial-up / modem

Dial-up is the slower, low cost Internet service option. It allows customers to obtain a Internet connection using their computer's modem and home telephone line.

University network restrictions

If you are using a vendor-provided Internet connection and need to access a University system that is restricted to University network connections, you may need to install and run VPN on your computer.
