DHCP Ethernet Service

Currently, if you are using a ResNet connection you must use DHCP. Also, many classrooms and Internet kiosks have DHCP-enabled etherjacks. For Ethernet connections in campus offices, contact your network administrator to find out if you should use DHCP.

Follow these simple steps to use DHCP:

You must know your Internet ID and password to complete these steps.
If you do not know them, call Technology Help at 612-301-HELP.

Find your Hardware Address

A hardware address, a.k.a., MAC Address, is a unique address encoded directly in the ethernet adapter of your computer. Your hardware address does not change even when the IP address of your system changes. For security reasons, the hardware address is used in a registration process to identify your system on the network. Only registered computers will be able to take advantage of DHCP service.

To find your Hardware Address go to: Finding the Hardware Address for DHCP.

Register your computer's Hardware Address

This can be done with any web browser on any computer that is connected to the Internet.

  1. If you are using this from your residence hall, go to the Web site: www.resnet.umn.edu. Otherwise go directly to the https://wired.netaccess.umn.edu/cgi-bin/register.pl, and skip to item 6.
  2. Click on Sign up for ethernet service.
  3. If you haven't signed up for the ResNet ethernet service, you will need to register. Fill these out and read/agree-to the ResNet User Agreement.
  4. At the Resident, Computer, and Networking Information page click on the Next button.
  5. Select Add new hardware address and click the Next button.
  6. Please read the Acceptable Use Policies and click the I Agree button.
  7. Enter your First Name, Last Name, Internet ID, and Hardware Address. When entering the Hardware Address, type the string of letters and numbers without hyphens (i.e. 00b05f62c44b). Do not insert spaces and make sure that you do not confuse the letters for numbers (There will only be numbers and the letters a-f in the address). Click the Next button.

  8. Residence Hall students will be redirected to the ResNet site. Select the appropriate button to continue.
  9. Enter the password for your Internet ID; click Finish Registration.
  10. Select the File menu, and the exit (or quit) command from your browser to clear out your Internet ID and password from your browser's memory.
  11. It may take up to half an hour for your registration to become active between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week. Otherwise, the hardware address registrations are processed at 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.
