One person / One Internet account
What You Need to Know
- You will have only one Internet ID.
After your accounts are merged, you will have a single active Internet ID. This ID will be used for accessing registration, payroll information, your directory information, etc. - PeopleSoft, Financial FormsNirvana, EGMS, etc
Enterprise systems are an important exception! If the Internet ID which you currently use to access any of these systems becomes defunct, you may continue using it (only for those systems). Alternately, you may contact those responsible for access to a particular system and request that your access be changed to your active Internet ID. If you are actively using both of your accounts in EGMS or Financial FormsNirvana, please contact the E-Mail Accounts Office at 612-626-8366. - Email delivery will not be interrupted.
All email sent to your secondary Internet ID (the one which you choose to abandon) will be delivered to your active account. If you would rather not have this forwarding take place, please call 1Help at 612-301-HELP after your accounts are merged. - Files will not be transferred automatically.
Before merging your accounts, you should move all files and email folders (other than the Inbox) that you wish to keep from the secondary to the primary account. If you need assistance with this transfer, please see our online guide at http://www.umn.edu/adcs/guides/accounts/filetransfer.html or call the Helpline at 612-301-HELP. - Old e-mail messages may appear in your inbox.
Some people may see e-mail messages from their defunct inbox appear in their merged account. If you do not want these messages, simply delete them. - Disk quotas have been increased.
Quotas on space for email folders and other storage have been increased (50MB for basic Client/Server accounts, 100 for Interactive) to accommodate users who were actively using space on both of their accounts. Quotas on web space will be staying at 20MB. - Modem access rules are not changing.
All students and staff receive 50 free hours of modem access per month. This will not change. However, due to a historical accident users with two active accounts were able to get 50 hours with each for a total of 100 free hours per month. As everyone will now have a single account, this will no longer be the case. - Library access will adjust.
Your library access will take into account your roles as both student and staff.
Process
Internet IDs and accounts which remain to be merged are being
classified into various groups based on a number of usage factors.
Affected users received emails beginning in early May outlining the
particular procedure which applies to them.
Currently, only a small group of users are left to be merged. This basically consists of users who have been actively using both accounts. Before August 4, you must choose which Internet ID you wish to keep by visiting the following web page (you can log in with either Internet ID):
https://www.umn.edu/dirtools?which=merge
When you make your choice, the process to merge your accounts will begin immediately. If you do not choose an Internet ID by August 4, 2003, your accounts will automatically be merged on that date, keeping whichever Internet ID is our system's "best guess" as to which is more active.
This single active Internet ID will be used to log in to University of Minnesota Internet applications, such as central e-mail, modem pool, wireless, and anything which uses the "Internet Login" web page. This includes course registration, paycheck information, etc.
Messages currently in your central e-mail Inbox for your "secondary" Internet ID (the Internet ID which you choose to abandon) will automatically be sent to the email account associated with the active Internet ID.
PLEASE NOTE: Before merging your accounts, you should move all files and email folders (other than the Inbox) that you wish to keep from the secondary to the primary account. If you need assistance with this transfer, please see our online guide at http://www.umn.edu/adcs/guides/accounts/filetransfer.html or call the Helpline at 612-301-HELP.

Background
Before Fall 2002, when a University student became a University employee,
they were issued a staff Internet ID and email account in addition to and
separate from the student Internet ID and email account. Likewise, when an
employee registered for a class, they were issued a student Internet ID
and e-mail account.
Initially this account division was necessary for e-mail administrative reasons. When that need went away, employee and student account divisions were required to satisfy different privacy requirements for those with employee status and student status.
Over the years the reasons for assigning separate accounts have become obsolete, and it was decided in 2002 to begin the process of moving to a single account for each person. The first phase, implemented late in 2002, was to stop assigning new accounts for people who took on new roles as students or staff. The second phase, completed in the first weeks of 2003, was to remove duplicate accounts which were no longer active (student accounts whose owners had not registered recently, or staff accounts whose owners are no longer employed at the University).
The most challenging phase of what is known as the "merge" process is now in motion. In this third and final phase, Internet Services will be merging active accounts. Only a handful of our users in the University Community actively use both of their Internet IDs and email accounts; many do not even know they have two. But care is required in taking into consideration possible issues and affects on other systems. We are doing our best to address such issues in advance, and respond quickly to unforeseen problems.
