About Your Web Space
The basic client/server account provides an e-mail account, a 1GB home directory, and 20MB of Web space. The home directory space can be used for IMAP e-mail folders, school files, and other general file storage. The Web space can host your personal Web page, but this type of account does not allow CGI scripts or SSH access. In order to store files of any type, you must copy the files to your server using SFTP software. For information on transferring files, go to http://www.umn.edu/adcs/guides/accounts/filetransfer.html.
Web Page Folder
The server you store your files on includes a special folder called "web-docs." Anything put into this folder is publicly accessible on the Web. Do not put anything confidential into this folder! Also, you should not delete this folder, as it cannot be recreated without assistance from systems personnel.
You may design your own Web page and upload those files into your web-docs folder. This will allow others to see your Web page over the World Wide Web.
Transferring your Web files using SFTP
If you create your HTML files on your own computer, you can use SFTP to transfer your HTML files, graphics, etc. to your web space on the server. Enter the following information:
- Hostname: <your internet ID>.email.umn.edu
- Username: <your internet ID>
- Password: <your password>
- Directory: web-docs
- Username: <your internet ID>
File Permissions
Remember to make your files "world-readable" after you upload them. This process is simple, but it varies by SFTP software. Our file transfer guides contain instructions for setting the appropriate permissions on your Web files.
Designing Web Pages
In order to effectively use your web space, it is useful to have some familiarity with creating HTML documents and Web graphics. You will find several self-paced and instructor-led tutorials and courses at the University Technology Training Center.
Your URL
Your URL is http://www.tc.umn.edu/~<your Internet ID>
If you want a "home page" to appear on a browser when someone looks up your URL, you should put your home page file in your web-docs folder and name it one of the following:
index.html, home.html, welcome.html, Welcome.html, index.htm, INDEX.HTM
If you do not have a file with one of the above names in your web-docs folder, and you try to access your Web page through a browser, you will only see a listing of all the files you have in your web-docs folder. Please note that when naming your web documents, file names on the server are case sensitive: the files index.html and INDEX.HTML are recognized by the server as two different files.
About the Personal Web Page Service
Our goal is to provide reliable Web services to all users of this service. If activity related to your web space is found to be excessive and/or adversely affects server performance or other users, we reserve the right to make necessary adjustments.
