Install VPN
client
software
|
Windows 98SE*, ME, NT*, 2000* and XP*
* 98SE includes service pack 2 * NT with service
pack 6 * 2000 with service pack 4 * XP with service
pack 2. Note: Windows 95 and 98 are not supported
but 98SE is supported.
Upgrade notice: if you upgrade
to the latest Cisco client, delete the old uofmvpn
profile (shown in Figure 4) from within the existing
VPN client. When you download the new software,
it will overwrite the old VPN client. AHC/Fairview
users with ahcvpn and umpvpn VPN workgroup profiles
should contact their VPN support.
|
| Where
is it
installed? |
In a typical installation the software is saved on
your hard disk:
- the VPN "dialer" is installed in your Start
menu; this is the software you use to initiate a
VPN connection
- the installer (an .exe file) you download is typically
saved to your Desktop folder, unless you specify
a different location when the download begins or
if you have your browser configured to save downloads
to another location.
|
| Get it. |
Get the Cisco VPN client software.
- Before you begin,
exit any applications other than a Web
browser (such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla).
- To download the software, follow the appropriate
Download link on the VPN
main page.
- Some restrictions apply to downloading the software.
Since the software is available only to currently enrolled
or employed students, staff and faculty, you must enter
your InternetID (x.500 username) and password before you
can download it. (If you don't know your centrally assigned
InternetID and password, contact
1-HELP.)
|
| Save it. |
- Navigate to the location on your computer where you
want to save the software, such as your desktop, your
documents folder, or another easily accessible place.
- Then click on the Save button. Do not change
the software's name. (You may want to write down the exact
name that appears in the save window.)
- When you double-click on the software's icon, the software
will automatically unzip itself and suggest that you save
the file to a location, such as C:\windows\temp,
from which it will launch its "install wizzard." (You
can save the unzipped files anywhere; just remember their
location so you can find them again.)
|
| Automatic install. |
You should briefly see the "VPN Client" splash/welcome
screen, signalling that the VPN software is automatically
getting installed on your machine.
Select the "Next" and "Yes" buttons,
as appropriate, to advance through the installation
process.
During the installation process, your Network
Settings will automatically get updated with the
correct setting to use this service at the University.

|
| Finish
and
restart. |
Before you use the VPN client the
first time, you must restart your computer. At the end of
the installation you can select two options:
- Yes, I want to restart: this radio button is already
selected.
- No, I will restart my computer later.

| Padlock. |
| To confirm that you have made a
successful VPN connection, look for a small
yellow padlock icon in the Windows Toolbar (Figure
6). Since the VPN client runs in the background,
you may need to rely on the presence of this
padlock to let you know that you are connected.
Tip: If you do not see the padlock, verify
that you have an active Internet connection.
To get back to the VPN window (Figure 4), right-click
on the padlock icon and select the VPN Client
option. |

To disconnect, right-click the padlock icon. Select the

Disconnect tip
Security software such as VPN places greater demands
on your system, often resulting in slower performance.
If you no longer need the security VPN offers, disconnect
from the VPN server.
To quit using VPN, from the menu bar at the top of
the VPN client window, select the Connection Entries
menu and choose Exit VPN Client.

InternetID. |
| Your uofmvpm
profile/settings.
The uofmvpn profile/settings that you
downloaded have the default settings recommended
by the University of Minnesota. These profile/settings
are read-only; you have no write privileges.
Although you cannot make changes to this profile,
advanced users may want to duplicate it and
make changes to that copy. Two changes you might
want to make are: saving your InternetID and
activating the backup server.
Caution
After clicking the Modify button discussed
below, a window opens (Figure 7) that contains
fields you should not alter. The fields are
Connection Entry, Description and
Host. Also, do not make changes to
any fields in the Group Authentication
section.
At your own risk alter the settings
available from the Transport tab; the
U of MN cannot guarantee that any changes
made here will be supported.

Saving your InternetID

- Rename this duplicate entry by using the
Modify button at the top of the VPN

button.

Activate
backup
server. |
The University has a backup server for
VPN 3000. Selecting this option will enable you to seamlessly
connect to the VPN backup server if there is an outage on
the main VPN server. Any networking software you were using,
however, will not automatically reconnect. To reestablish
a connection, exit your web browser, e-mail software, or
other networking software and reconnect.
- To activate this option return to the VPN client
window (Figure 4).
- Select the uofmvpn connection entry
then click on the Modify button.
- From the resulting Properties window,
select the Backup Servers tab.
- Select the Enable Backup Servers option.
- To save the changes, click on the Save
button.
