Installation Guide for Cisco VPN Client for Mac OS X 10.2 and Later

Install VPN Client software.

Mac OS 10.2 and up

Upgrade notice: if you upgrade to the latest Cisco clients: (1) delete the old uofmvpn profile (shown in Figure 4) from within the existing VPN client; (2) and overwrite the old client by running the installer (see Cisco VPN Client.mpkg in Figure 2). AHC/Fairview users with ahcvpn and umpvpn VPN workgroup profiles: before installing the new, customized U of M client/profile, contact your VPN support.

Get started.

Get the client software.

  1. Before you begin, turn off virus protection software and quit any applications other than a Web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape).

  2. To download the software, follow the appropriate Download link on the VPN main page.

  3. Some restrictions apply to downloading the software. The software is available only to currently enrolled or employed students, staff and faculty and you must enter your Internet ID (x.500 username) and password before you can download it. (If you don't know your centrally assigned Internet ID and password, contact 1-HELP.)

Install
the
software
on your
machine.

The client installer should download to the desktop in Apple's Disk Image form. The exact name changes with each version. Look for an icon with a filename starting with "vpnclient" and ending in ".dmg".

Your web browser should automatically mount the disk image on the desktop: CiscoVPNClient (Figure 1). If not, double-clicking the Disk Image file (.dmg) should activate desktop mounting.

Once you actually begin the installation process, click the appropriate buttons to advance through this process.

Admin name and password.

To begin installing the software, double-click the Cisco VPN Client.mpkg icon (Figure 2) inside the mounted disk image.

  1. You are alerted that you need Mac OS X's Administrator password, as shown below in Figure 3. (This is the password you created when Mac OS X was activated for the first time on your computer.)
  2. The Name and Password Authenticate box (Figure 3) automatically shows the name of the active user. (If you are logged into Mac OS X as a user other than the administrator, you must change the name to the administrator's username.)
  3. Type in the corresponding password and click OK.

Note: the "Install Cisco VPN Client" window changes slightly for each OS X version. The "Authenticate" dialog box does not.

Authenticate window: the Name you must enter is your administrator username, which is not necessarily the same as the sample shown here.

The client software.
  1. Unless you select otherwise, the VPN client software is installed in Applications on your hard disk.
  2. The installer also asks where to install its command-line components, which are necessary but will not be used by the average user. Click Next to allow the installer to use the default setting.
  3. Finally, you may be prompted to choose a place for the installer to put an alias (shortcut) for easy access. The dock or desktop are convenient places.
  4. When prompted to confirm all the choices you have made -- unless you need to make changes -- click Install.

The dock:
If you install the alias (shortcut) on the dock, you will see an icon with VPN as part of its name.

Using VPN.

To use VPN, start it from the shortcut you created or select it from the Applications folder.

  1. Select the Connection Entries tab. (shown in Figure 4, below)
  2. Double-click the entry labeled uofmvpn. (Figure 5, below)
  3. In the resulting prompt window, enter your U of MN Internet ID (x500 username), replacing any sample username that's already entered.
  4. Then type the password that goes with your Internet ID in the appropriate box.
  5. When you're done, click the OK button.

Connect.

Connection successful.

When you are connected, the bottom of the VPN client window, Figure 4, will include the statement:

connected to "uofmvpn"

Tip: If you do not get this message, verify that you have an active Internet connection.

Disconnect.

Quit the VPN client.

To disconnect, click the Disconnect button. (Figures 4 and 6)

Disconnect tip
Security software such as VPN places greater demands on your system, often resulting in slower performance. If you no longer need the security VPN offers, disconnect from the VPN server.

To Quite VPN, select the VPN Client menu, next to the Apple menu at the top of the screen.

Save
your UM
InternetID.

Your uofmvpm profile/ settings.

The uofmvpn profile/settings that you downloaded have the default settings recommended by the University of Minnesota. These profile/settings are read-only; you have no write privileges. Although you cannot make changes to this profile, advanced users may want to duplicate it and make changes to that copy. Two changes you might want to make are: saving your InternetID and activating the backup server.

Caution

After clicking the Modify button discussed below, a window opens (Figure 7) that contains fields you should not alter. The fields are Connection Entry, Description and Host. Also, do not make changes to any fields in the Group Authentication section.

At your own risk alter the settings available from the Transport tab; the U of MN cannot guarantee that any changes made here will be supported.

Saving your InternetID

  • To create a profile that saves your Internet ID, begin by highlighting the uofmvpn profile (Figure 5).
  • From the menu bar (next to the Apple menu at the top of the screen), select the Connection Entries menu and choose Duplicate.
  • Rename this duplicate entry by using the Modify button at the top of the VPN Client window. Use a name that's meaningful to you. (The example in Figure 7 shows the name: uofmvpn-duplicate.)
  • To save your InternetID, click the Save button.

Activate
backup
server.

The University has a backup server for VPN 3000. To activate this option select the Backup Servers tab (shown in Figure 7) and select Enable Backup Servers. Click on the Save button to save the changes.

Selecting this option will enable you to seamlessly connect to the VPN backup server if there is an outage on the main VPN server. Any networking software you were using, however, will not automatically reconnect. To reestablish a connection, exit your web browser, e-mail software, or other networking software and reconnect.

Detailed manual.

New in June 2005: when you download the U of M VPN client software, you get a copy of Cisco's documentation for that client; it's in PDF format.
