Windows Internet Software Updates

Windows Me and Windows XP are able to extract ZIP files
without extra decompression software;
for earlier Windows versions you may need to install such software,
for example, the freeware application
7-Zip.
Web Browsers
- Firefox, latest version (mozilla.org)
- Netscape, latest verison (netscape.com)
- Netscape Communicator 4.x (FTP: netscape.com)
for older computer systems that will not run the newer browsers above.
Please note, the Netscape Communicator 4 series is no longer updated to fix security flaws
that it may contain.
- Internet Explorer
(microsoft.com): Windows has shipped with Internet Explorer since Windows 95,
so you probably already have Internet Explorer installed —
look in the Start Menu within Programs.

Chat, Instant Messaging (IM)

instant messaging for the University of Minnesota.
UMChat is based on the open Jabber protocol
and supports encryption to secure your messages in transit.
You may use the Web-based client or download one of the supported clients
and install it on your computer.
