Data Recovery Agreement

Academic and Distributed Computing Services has reached an agreement with ONTRACK Data International to provide University staff and faculty and departments with data recovery services. ONTRACK specializes in software and services that help computer users recover their valuable data. This new partnership will benefit U of M employees by safeguarding their crucial data in the event of equipment breakdown, virus infection, or everyday human error.

As part of the data recovery process users can download Data Advisor for free . Data Advisor is a diagnostic utility that pinpoints the source of data loss and provides advice on how to address retrieving the information. Data Advisor will also be available on a floppy that pinpoints the source of data loss and provides advice on how to address retrieving the information.

When a user calls the ADCS HelpLine at 612-626-4276 and data recovery is necessary, they will be advised to boot from the Data Advisor diskette. This software first tests the integrity of the hard drive.

If the drive is not physically damaged, Data Advisor will:

  • scan for virus infections
  • test the system memory and data structures
  • provide diagnostics for Ontrack engineers to determine the proper recovery procedures.

Another option may be Remote Data Recovery, using a modem connection to allow an ONTRACK engineer to facilitate the remote recovery of the lost information. Remote Data Recovery can expedite the recovery process, getting your data back more quickly. You may contact Ontrack directly at 1-800-872-2599 and mention the University of Minnesota contract.

Special pricing was negotiated by ADCS.
