Your Personal File Storage Space

Your University of Minnesota central Internet account provides you with server space to store your files. These files may be papers you have written, photos you have taken, application installers, or anything you may have saved to your computer.

Benefits

  • ability to access your files from any Internet-connected computer with the appropriate SFTP software.
  • reliable storage, regularly backed up and maintained
  • no need to rely on floppy or ZIP disks, or to write to several CD-R discs, as your only means of backup storage

Personal Web site

Your file storage space also includes a folder named "web-docs" for you to create your own Web site within the UMN system. For more information on your Web space, go to http://www.umn.edu/adcs/help/webpage.html.

Current FTP Users: SSL/SFTP Conversion

As of July 5th 2005, the University will no longer support FTP connections to your personal file server and Web space. You will need to use SFTP or SCP software instead; this will keep your password safe while in transit, whereas FTP sends it in the clear. Read about the FTP to SFTP conversion for more information about this requirement.

Which SFTP software can I use?
How do I use it?

We have tested the following SFTP applications on the most common computing platforms. Several others may exist, but those listed here are widely used and freely downloadable. These programs are already installed in all ADCS Student Computing Facilities.
