Email Account Setup Guide


1) Open Mail, go to the "Mail" menu (if you get other pop-up screens when opening Mail, close them until you can click on the "Mail" menu), and click on "Preferences..."



2) When the "Accounts" window appears, the Check for new mail pull-down menu should be set to at least 15 minutes. Change this if it is set to check more frequently. Click on the "Add Account" button.



3) In the "Account Information" tab, choose Account Type from the pull-down menu.
The remaining settings should be as follows:

    Description: <your full name>
    Email Address: <your Internet ID>@umn.edu
    Full Name: <your full name>

    Incoming Mail Server: <your Internet ID>.email.umn.edu
    User Name: <your Internet ID>
    Password: <your password> (optional)

To set Outgoing Mail Server and its variety of settings, click the Options button.




4) Make the following settings in the SMTP Server Options window:

    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.umn.edu

    Server port: 587
    Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) should be checked.

    Authentication: Password
    User Name: <your Internet ID>
    Password: <your password> (optional)




5) In the Special Mailboxes tab, fill in the following information:

Trash
    Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox
should be checked.
    Store deleted messages on the server should not be checked.
    Permanently erase deleted messages when: should be set to "Quitting."




6) In the Advanced tab, the settings should be as follows:

    Enable this account should be checked.
    Include when automatically checking for new mail should be checked.

    Keep copies of messages for offline viewing: (select the option that best suits you).

    IMAP Path Prefix: ~/mail/

    Port: 993
    Use SSL: should be checked
    Authentication: should be set to "Password."




LDAP Setup


1) Back in the Mail Preferences window, click on "Composing."


 

2) The settings seen here are recommended. Click the "Configure LDAP" button.



3) Click Add.



4) In the resulting window, input the following values and click Save.

    Name: U of MN LDAP

    Server: ldap.umn.edu

    Search Base: o=University of Minnesota,c=US

    Port: 389




5)  Click Close.



6) LDAP and Address Book functionality in Mail are enabled by a separate, dedicated Apple program called Address Book. To look up users on the LDAP Directory while using Mail, click Mail's Window menu and choose "Address Book."




7) In the Address Book window, highlight Directories and then U of MN LDAP. Input your search terms in the search field and hit the Return key.





Address Book Setup


1) To access the Address Book from Mail, click Mail's Window menu and choose "Address Book."



2) To add someone to your personal address book, either

    a) click the File menu of Address Book and choose New Card



or

    b) click the "Add New Person" button from the Address Book window.



3) Fill out as much information as necessary in the window that appears, then close the contact window, or add new entries as needed.



4) You should now notice a new entry in your Address Book. Create email lists by clicking on the File menu of Address Book and selecting "New Group".



5) To add users to the Group, drag existing entries to the list, or create new entries. When finished, close the Address Book window.




6) To use the address book in addressing a letter, first start a new email by going to the File menu of Mail and selecting "New Message" or by clicking the Compose button of the main Mail window.




7) When you begin typing a contact's name into the "To:" field, the full address is inserted by the Address Book's database, and you are ready to compose your letter.
