These are basic instructions for configuring POPmail/Lab and POPmail
to access your University e-mail account. If you are using a departmental
account, you will need to alter some of the information accordingly.
POPmail/Lab
- Fill in Full Name with your full name
- Fill in Mail Account which is of the form <Internet
ID>@<Internet ID>.email.umn.edu
- Fill in Password.
- Press OK.
- In most respects, the lab version of POPmail will behave like the
full version. See below if help for sending mail is needed.
NOTE:
- POPmail/Lab does not take messages from the server.
- When a message is selected and the Trash button is selected, this
will delete the message from the server.
- POPmail/Lab does not have an address book
- Can decode Mime, Uuencode, and BinHex enclosures
- Mac Lab/POPmail encodes attachments as BinHex only. (PC version you
have a choice.)
POPmail
- Pull down Setup menu.
- Select Username & Server.
- Fill in Full Name with your full name.
- Fill in Mail Account which is of the form. <Internet
ID>@<Internet ID>.email.umn.edu.
- Fill in Password with your password.
- (Optional) place <Internet ID>@tc.umn.edu
in Reply to address.
- Check POP3 server running at port 110.
Optional: Customize
You can customize some settings by pulling down the Setup and selecting
Options.

NOTE:
- Notify me when new mail arrives should only be checked by on campus
users. Computer will dial periodically if modem users have this checked.
- You can Set the document type when saving. That is, when you save
a message, it can be converted to a word processing format. Press Set
and select an installed word processing program.
- There is no Spell Checker available for POPmail. There are some commercially
available spell checkers that will work with POPmail, but the University
does not support these.
Receiving Mail
You are now ready to send and receive mail using POPmail. To view any
new messages, you will need to press the Fetch button, or pull
down Mail menu and select Fetch. Messages are initially
found in the Incoming Mail folder. If you wish to archive messages
you can:
- Select a message or several messages.
- Press the Move button.
- Select the desired folder or create a new folder.
Sending Mail
To send a message you can press the New button, or pull down the
File menu and select New and Mail message. This will
open an untitled mail sender window. You can compose e-mail messages from
this location.

Configuring the address book.
- Pull down the Setup menu.
- Select Edit Groups.
- Type a nickname that you can associate with the particular user or
group.
- Type all of the addresses for the group, which could be just one address.
- Leave an empty line.
- Enter in next nickname.
NOTE:
- The nickname cannot be typed into the To: field.
- To use the address book, you need to select the proper field (To:,
CC:)
- Press the triangle next to the To:
- Select the nickname from the list.
NOTE:
- Enclosures are encoded using BinHex only.
- Enclosures can be decoded from BinHex, Uuencode, or Mime encoding
schemes
