Enable Advanced Features

The recommended University of Minnesota settings for Eudora require features not enabled with a default installation of Eudora. Follow these instructions to enable them.

1) Quit Eudora if it is running.

2) Locate the Eudora Application Folder (usually found in "Applications".

3) Highlight the Eudora application icon, click the File menu and choose Get Info.

4) In the resulting Eudora Info window, click the arrow to the left of the category "Plug-ins". Make sure "Esoteric Settings 6.0" in the drop-down list is checked.

5) Close the Eudora Info window.

Email Account Setup Guide

Eudora is a highly customizable e-mail client with unique features — including far more options than the average user will ever need. Many of those settings are optional, and are dependent on what you prefer to use. This guide will cover the recommended settings for the University of Minnesota e-mail system:

1) Open Eudora. If this is the first time Eudora has been opened on your Mac, you'll probably see a screen like this:

If not, skip to Step 6a).

Keychain is a Mac OS X Utility that stores passwords for multiple applications, and Eudora supports this feature. Choose the setting you prefer here.

2) Eudora explains the three modes you can choose from; choose "Tell Me More" if you'd like the different choices described in more detail. After this, unless you purchased a Eudora license from the publisher, just click OK.

3) Once again, if  you have not purchased a Eudora license, just click OK.

4) This guide assumes you are setting up Eudora from scratch.

5) The assumption here is that you'll want to set Eudora as your default e-mail client. Unless you have some reason not to, click Yes.

6a) If you have completed steps 1-5, Eudora will have opened the Settings window; skip to step 6b).  If you skipped here from Step 1, you will need to open it manually by going to the Eudora menu and selecting Preferences or to the Special menu and selecting Settings:

6b) This is where you'll begin inputting your e-mail settings:

Checking Mail
    Username
: <your_internet_id>
    Mail Server: <your_internet_id>.email.umn.edu

Sending Mail
    Real Name
: Your full name
    SMTP Server: smtp.umn.edu
Return Address: Only needs to be changed if it differs from your username.

The checkbox "Make Eudora the default Mailer" can be checked if it isn't already; this would have been set in Step 5 after clicking "Yes."

7) Move down to Checking Mail in the left-hand column of this window. Username and Mail Server should already be set from  step 6b). Change "Mail Protocol" from POP to IMAP. This is the preferred protocol for the University of Minnesota.

8) Note the change in the right column when you changed to IMAP. IMAP Authentication is handled in a different pane in the left column, and will be set in Steps 10 and 11. If you choose to check for mail automatically at a set interval, be aware it is considered inappropriate at the University of Minnesota to check more frequently than once every 15 minutes.

Account/Server Information
    Username
: <your_internet_id>
    Mail Server: <your_internet_id>.email.umn.edu
    Mail Protocol: IMAP
    Location prefix: ~/mail/

Connection
    Check for mail every
: 15 minutes
Send on check: (set to your preferences)

9) In the Sending Mail pane of the left column, set your default domain as "umn.edu". Eudora will automatically append this to any U of MN internet IDs you input when sending messages. Intended to save you the trouble of typing the full address, this should only be used when the person you are sending to is known to possess a University e-mail address. Eudora's Address Book, covered in a later step, will offer more advanced addressing methods for your convenience. SMTP Server should already be set from a previous step.

Server
    Return Address
: <your_internet_id>
    Default Domain: umn.edu
    SMTP Server: smtp.umn.edu
    Allow authorization: (should be checked)

Connection
    Immediate send
: (set to your preferences)
Send on check: (set to your preferences)
Use separate thread for sending: (set to your preferences)

Message
    Fix curly quotes
: (set to your preferences)
Keep copies: (set to your preferences)
Automatically Fcc to original mailbox: (set to your preferences)

10) Scroll down toward the bottom of the left column until you reach the SSL panel. Choose "Required (TLS)" from the SSL for SMTP category. NOTE: this is only supported in Mac OS X version 10.2 and up.

11) Under SSL for IMAP, choose "Required (TLS)". NOTE: this is only supported in Mac OS X version 10.2 and up.

12) In the left column, scroll down to Ports & Protocols. Change the following relevant port numbers as follows:

SMTP Port: 587
IMAP Port: 993
LDAP Port
: 389 (should be the default setting here already)

LDAP Setup

1) While still in the Settings window, scroll down to the "LDAP" pane. Fill in the Directory Services Host field with the following:

    ldap://ldap.umn.edu/o=University of Minnesota,c=US

Click OK to close the Settings window.

2) To look up addresses using LDAP, select Directory Services from the Window menu.

3) Input the address you're looking up in the Enter query field.

Address Book Setup

1) To open the Address Book, first go to "Window" and then select "Address Book"

2) To Add a new Address Book entry, click on the icon at the bottom left of the window.

3) Fill in a short, one-word phrase that will indicate your address book entry in the "Nickname" field. Enter the addressee's full name in the "Full Name:" field, and then their First and Last name in the appropriate fields below that. The actual email address goes in the field labeled: "This nickname will expand to the following address(es)". You can add other information to this person's entry by clicking on the tabs labeled Home, Work, Other, Notes and Photo.

4) Making an Email List is almost exactly the same as making an individual nickname entry, except that you should check the box next to "Recipient List" in the upper right-hand corner of the Address Book window.

5) To send a new message with Eudora, click the New Message icon on the floating toolbar or choose "New Message" from the Message menu.

6) Input the nickname of your intended recipient from the address book. Click the "Send" button when you have finished composing your e-mail message.
