Windows Vista DHCP Ethernet Configuration
Most Etherjacks on campus should use DHCP. If you need a static IP address you should contact nts@umn.edu.
Follow these simple steps to use DHCP:
- Find your Hardware Address (a.k.a., MAC Address).
- Register your computers's Hardware Address.
- Configure your computer to use DHCP.
You must know your Internet ID and password to complete these steps. If you do not know them, call Technology Help at 612-301-4357
Find your Hardware Address
- Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
(You may need to choose Settings before Control Panel, depending on your Start Menu configuration.) - Click on Network and Internet.
(Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.) - Click on Network and Sharing Center.
- Click on Manage network connections on the left side.
- Double click on Local Area Connection.
- Click on the Details button.
- The Hardware Address is labeled Physical Address.

Alternate Method #1:
- Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
- Click on Network and Internet.
(Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.) - Click on Network and Sharing Center.
- Click on Manage network connections.
- Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
- Point your mouse pointer to the name of your ethernet card, under Connect using:, and hover it there (see image).

Alternate Method #2:
- Click on the Start menu.
- Type cmd where it says Start Search in the lower left and press Enter.
- Enter getmac /V in the black window that appears. (If this doesn’t work, enter c:, enter cd c:\windows\system32, then enter getmac /V.)
- Look for Local Area Conn, then Physical Address in the text that is returned.

Register your computer's Hardware Address
This can be done with any web browser on any computer that is connected to the Internet.
- If you are using this from your residence hall, go to the Web site: http://www.resnet.umn.edu and click on the link for Sign up for ethernet service. Follow the instructions from there.
- Otherwise, go directly to https://wwws.nts.umn.edu/cgi-bin/dhcpreg.
- Click the button to Add a new hardware address and click on next.
- Please read the Acceptable Use Policies and click the I Agree button.
- Enter you Internet ID and Hardware Address. When entering the Hardware Address, type the string of letters and numbers without hyphens (e.g. 00b05f62c44b). Do not insert spaces or punctuation (There will only be numbers and the letters a-f in the address). Click the Next button.

- Residence Hall students will be redirected to the ResNet site. Select the appropriate button to continue.
- Enter the password for your Internet ID; click Finish Registration.
- Select the File menu, and the Exit or Quit command from your browser to clear out your Internet ID and password from your browser's memory.
- You will receive an email confirming your DHCP Registration. It may take up to an hour for your registration to become active between 5am and 5pm, 7 days a week. Otherwise the hardware addresses are updated at 7pm and 3am.
DHCP Ethernet Configuration for Windows Vista
- Click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel.
- Click on Network and Internet.
(Skip this step if you do not see this Control Panel item.) - Click on Network and Sharing Center.
- Click on Manage network connections.
- Right click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties. If Windows say it needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
- Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
- Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window.
- Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window.
- Click Close to close the Network Connections window.
- Click Close to close the Control Panel window.
- Restart your computer.
