Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 for Windows

Current students and staff may obtain Microsoft Office from University Computer Services. For help installing this software, please contact 1-HELP.

In this guide:


E-mail Account Setup Guide


  1. Open Outlook 2007 and click "Tools" in the menu bar, then select "Account Settings."


  2. In the "Account Settings" window, from the E-mail tab click on the "New" button.


  3. On the bottom of the "Add New E-mail Account" check the box for "Manually configure server setting or additional server types", then click "Next >".


  4. Make sure that "Internet E-mail" is selected then click "Next >".


  5. In the "Add New E-mail Account" window fill in the below setting and then select the More Settings button.
    Your Name
    The name that appears on the messages you send.
    E-mail address
    YourInternetID@umn.edu
    Account Type
    IMAP
    Incoming mail server
    YourInternetID.email.umn.edu
    User Name
    YourInternetID
    Password
    your Internet password


  6. Select the Outgoing Server tab.
    Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
    Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.


  7. Select the Advanced tab.
    For Incoming server (IMAP), enter 993 as the port, and choose SSL encryption.
    For Outgoing server (SMTP), enter 587 as the port, and choose TLS encryption.
    Drag the Server Timeouts slider toward Long, setting the value to "10 minutes".
    For the Root folder path, enter mail in all lower case letters.

    Click OK.

  8. The "Add New E-mail Account" window should now be displayed again. Select "Next" and then "OK" in the "Microsoft Office Outlook" window warning that the root folder path has changed. Now click "Finish" on the following window Congratulation window.


Your E-mail account should now be successfully setup. Your new mail will be shown in the left side panel under the "Inbox" folder.



LDAP Setup

  1. Go to "Tools" and "Account Settings" once again and select the Address Books tab. On this tab click the "New..." button.


  2. Select the bullet circle next to "Internet Directory Service (LDAP)", then click "Next".


  3. Now in the field next to "Server Name", type "ldap.umn.edu", and click "More Settings...":


  4. On the following window select the tab labeled "Search". In the field under "Search Base" select the "Custom" bullet and enter "o=University of Minnesota, c=US" into the text field. When finished, click "OK".


  5. Back on the "Add New E-Mail Account" window select "Next" and then "Finish" to end the wizard. Then select "Close" on the "Account Settings" window.

    Your LDAP Address Book should now be successfully setup. The following instructions will detail how to use this function for obtaining University e-mail addresses.

  6. Before continuing Outlook needs to be restarted. Close the program by clicking on the "X" in the top right corner. Once closed reopen the application.

  7. To look people up in the LDAP directory, first go to "Tools" and then select "Address Book".

  8. Make sure the drop down list under "Address Book " has "ldap.umn.edu" (or whatever you named the LDAP entry) selected, then click on "Advanced Find" along the right hand side.

  9. Enter in the first/last/etc information into the form and click "OK", the results will be displayed on your screen. *Note, it sometimes helps to keep the searches broad, don't enter in too much detail.
