Windows Mobile 2003 E-mail Setup Guide

This guide will help you set up your e-mail software to use the currently-recommended IMAP protocol. An alternative POP-based guide is available if you are sure you want to use POP instead of IMAP.

  1. Open the device's email client by selecting Inbox from the Start menu.

  2. Select New Account from the Accounts menu.



  3. Provide your email address in the Enter e-mail address field. Tap Next.



  4. At the Auto configuration screen, tap Next (or Skip if the process has not completed).



  5. Enter your name in the Your Name field, your Internet ID in the User name field, and your Internet password in the Password field. Optionally, check on the Save password option. Tap Next.



  6. Select IMAP4 for Account type and enter a useful name for this account, i.e. UMN. Tap Next.



  7. At the Server information screen, enter the following information.
    • Incoming mail: user1234.email.umn.edu (where user1234 is your Internet ID)
    • Outgoing mail: smtp.umn.edu
    • Domain: umn.edu




  8. Tap Options.
  9. For your device to check for new messages, automatically, check the Connect and check for new messages every box and set the check interval. Verify that Connection is set appropriately for your device. Tap Next.



  10. Check both the Outgoing e-mail server requires authentication and the Require SSL connection boxes. To limit the date range of messages to be downloaded to the device, check the Only display messages from the last X days box and set the number of days accordingly. Tap Next.



  11. Select either Get message headers only or Get full copy of messages from the drop-down list. Downloading message headers only may drastically reduce the amount of time required to receive messages and does allow full messages to be downloaded individually. If receiving headers only, set the Include and When getting full copy, get attachments options accordingly. The Include option determines how much of the message will be downloaded initially. Tap Finish.
